Bartolo Mascarello's Barbera d'Alba 2024 is an authentic, fresh expression of Barbera in the Langhe, with a traditional, terroir-driven character. The overall weather pattern of 2024 in the Langhe preserved lovely acidity and aromatic finesse in the Barbera grapes, confirming the traditional, rigorous style of this Barolo cellar. In the glass it is a bright purplish ruby. The nose shows fresh red cherry, raspberry and blackberry, with delicate floral notes (violet) and hints of spice. The palate is dynamic and balanced, with good acidity, gentle tannins and a clean, fragrant finish. An enjoyable, versatile wine, made to be enjoyed young, yet with personality and class.
Production method: Conventional. 100% Barbera: since the estate's San Lorenzo Barbera vineyard was pulled out in 2020, the grapes come from like-minded grower friends. Hand-harvested with rigorous bunch selection. Fermented in concrete vats for about 10-12 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for about 20 months in large old oak casks, without barriques, in keeping with the cellar's traditional style.
Food pairings: Pairs well with lighter dishes of Piedmontese and Italian cooking: agnolotti with ragù, light braises, roast white meats, mushroom dishes, not-too-heavy red meats, semi-aged cheeses, cured meats and tasty home cooking. An excellent everyday wine with simple, rustic dishes.
