Luigi Pira’s Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2023 is a wine that celebrates the versatility and richness of Barbera, grown on 2 hectares of vineyards in Roddino. This deep ruby red with purple hues offers an enveloping bouquet of ripe cherry, raspberry, violet and sweet spice, with a hint of vanilla and cocoa from the oak aging. The palate is full-bodied and well-structured, with a lively freshness that balances the richness of the fruit, soft tannins and a long, slightly spicy finish. The warm but well-managed 2023 vintage gives this Barbera a concentration and elegance that make it perfect to accompany succulent dishes or to be enjoyed on its own, with an aging potential of 5-7 years.
Production Method The Barbera grapes come from a 2-hectare vineyard in Roddino, planted in 1999, on clay-limestone soils. Manual harvest at the end of September, fermentation in horizontal fermenters at a controlled temperature (28-30 °C) for 12-14 days, with maceration on the skins to extract color and structure. Aging for 12 months, divided between French oak barriques and tonneaux (20% new) for 6 months and large Slavonian oak barrels for another 6 months, followed by 6 months in the bottle. Production of approximately 8,000 bottles.
Pairings Grilled meat, pasta with ragù, sautéed mushrooms, medium-aged cheeses such as Toma Piemontese.
